Yale Day of Service: CT, New Haven Community Boating Day w/ Canal Dock Boathouse #1 (early morning shift)
Join the Canal Dock Boathouse http://www.canaldock.org (CDB) on Sunday May 19 as we host a "Community Boating Day" along the scenic New Haven shoreline. NO experience required! The CDB is a non-profit (located a short distance from the Long Wharf Drive food trucks, IKEA, and the Hotel Marcel) which has partnered with the City of New Haven to provide affordable community-oriented waterfront activities. Every year the CDB hosts several days when the public can participate in FREE activities, including kayaking, rowing a dragon boat, the use of Concept2 RowErg machines, and rowing a 5-person shell (4 sweep rowers + 1 coxswain).
We will also share with the public information about other programs and services provided by the CDB, including yoga classes, rowing classes, recreational sailing, sailing classes, swimming lessons, and engaging youth focused activities including rowing and academic tutoring.
This Day of Service project is designed for adults, but family members 15 years or older who are prepared to participate are welcome to register along with their parents/guardians.
If you cannot join us on May 19, but are interested in learning more about CDB programs, we will be hosting five additional "Community Boating Days" on June 22, July 21, August 3, August 19, and September 21. Please visit: http://www.canaldock.org/events
In the event of significant inclement weather we will move the event to Saturday June 22. If possible, please keep the rain date open!
If the enthusiasm for this event is high we may host another YDOS event during one of the other summer "Community Boating Days". Please contact Mara.Balk@yale.edu for more information.
Your support and enthusiasm are appreciated. This page describes the first shift (7:00 AM - 10:00 AM). I will invite the alumni who register for the second shift (10:00 AM - 1:00 PM) to arrive early, so we can spend some time together. Of course, if you enjoy the first shift you can stay for the second shift!
1) The SET UP tasks (7:00 AM - 8:00 AM) include:
Setting up a shade tent and the registration table (also for distributing information).
Moving 10 rowing machines from the dock house out to the platform.
Moving the kayaks down to the floating dock.
Rigging the Quattro for sculling, move it to the water, and install the oars.
Moving the dragon boat to the floating dock, before attaching the head and tail!
Moving the rack with the PFDs (personal flotation devices) outside.
2) After the guests arrive (starting 8:00 AM) there will be many ACTIVITIES happening near the dockhouse and on the water:
Showing the guests how to use the Concept2 RowErg machines.
Helping the guests select the proper size PFD required for all water activities (for comfort and best flotation).
Helping the guests get in and out of the kayaks and the Quattro shell (capacity: four guest "sweep" rowers plus one experienced coxswain).
Experienced kayakers can help guide the guests around the New Haven harbor!
Rowing the dragon boat!
Giving tours of the boathouse.
Enjoying a game of cornhole!
Finally, some logistics:
1) Please register via the Yale DOS VolunteerHub portal ( http://yaledayofservice.volunteerhub.com/ ).
2) ALSO sign the separate 2024 CDB Waiver Packet, which is required of all CDB volunteers:
http://www.canaldock.org/events-1/volunteer-community-boating-day-1
If you are bringing a family member who is between 15, but not yet 18, their ODB waiver needs to be signed by a parent or guardian.
3) Different styles of PFDs are provided (and are required if you want to walk down to the floating dock), but if you own a PFD which you prefer, please bring it.
4) There will be shade, but to protect your skin and eyes please consider packing sunscreen, sun glasses, and a sun hat.
5) Restrooms are available.
6) And the most important answer is "yes". There is FREE street parking is available along Long Wharf Drive, across from the boathouse.
We hope to see you on the water!
